Fleur de Lawn @ Tualatin Valley Water District

Where did all the lawns go?  A common problem in the design of planned communities is that of inefficient turf areas.  The lower picture shows a very small lawn surrounded by concrete, & with a shade tree that will eventually get large.

Ask yourself.....what purpose does that lawn serve?  Are you going to play a game of soccer on it?  Put a blanket out & do some sunbathing?  A game of croquet?  The amount of water required to keep that lawn green mid-summer, the inefficiency of fertilizing it, the equipment & labor required to mow that small patch of grass..... Oieya Vey!

Turf is important, & has a most useful purpose if planned correctly, but it is our mission to eliminate non-functional lawns from the landscapes in our care.

Some other water-saving re-designs can include the modification of annual planting beds, using drought tolerant perennials, & other low-maintenance plant materials.
